The S.A.I.D. Principle

March 10, 2024

When I'm first meeting with an athlete we go over what their goals are with training. The core principle of exercise science and training that is brought up is the SAID principle. What is the SAID principle?

S.A.I.D. stands for " Specific Adaptations on Imposed Demands "

In the realm of exercise science, this principle exists as a fundamental principle that serves as a cornerstone for designing effective and efficient training programs. This principle underscores the concept that the human body will adapt specifically to the demands placed upon it. In simpler terms, the SAID principle highlights that the body responds and adjusts based on the type of stress or stimuli it experiences during exercise.

To delve deeper into the SAID principle, let's break down the various adaptations that an individual can achieve through consistent and targeted training:

1. Skill: Improving specific movements and techniques through practice and repetition.

2. Speed: Enhancing the ability to move quickly and explosively.

3. Power: Increasing the combination of strength and speed to generate force rapidly.

4. Strength: Building muscle strength and enhancing the ability to exert force against resistance.

5. Hypertrophy: Stimulating muscle growth and increasing muscle size.

6. Muscular Endurance: Improving the capacity to perform repetitive muscular contractions over an extended period.

7. Anaerobic Capacity: Enhancing the body's ability to perform high-intensity, short-duration activities.

8. Aerobic Capacity: Boosting the cardiovascular system's efficiency in utilizing oxygen during sustained physical activity.

9. Long Duration Endurance: Building the capacity to endure prolonged, low-to-moderate intensity exercise.

By understanding the SAID principle and its various adaptations, individuals and fitness professionals can tailor their training regimens to align with specific goals and desired outcomes. A well-rounded and goal-oriented exercise program that incorporates a mix of these adaptations can lead to comprehensive improvements in overall fitness and performance.

In conclusion, the SAID principle serves as a guiding principle in exercise science, emphasizing the importance of specificity when it comes to training adaptations. By applying the SAID principle intelligently and purposefully in training programs, individuals can optimize their progress, enhance their performance, and ultimately achieve their fitness goals effectively.

Remember, the key lies in identifying the specific demands you wish to impose on your body and crafting a training plan that aligns with those goals. Embrace the SAID principle, push your limits, and embark on a journey of continuous growth and improvement in your fitness endeavors.

Let's strive for specificity, challenge ourselves, and witness the incredible adaptations our bodies can make through the power of focused training!

We believe that movement is medicine, and by harnessing its power, you can transform your life in extraordinary ways. Overcoming Limitations We understand that the path to extraordinary is rarely easy. Life throws curveballs. Injuries, setbacks, and emotional challenges can make it difficult to stay motivated and pursue your passions. But often, the key to achieving the extraordinary lies in mastering the ordinary. It's about consistently showing up, putting in the work, and focusing on the small, daily habits that build a foundation for greatness. I've witnessed this firsthand with my client, Phil Jacobsen. Phil, a 72-year-old father and grandfather, works full-time at Costco. He's also an avid outdoorsman who loves fly fishing and hiking. Phil initially came to me with a simple goal: to get stronger, move better, reduce his pain, and feel less fragile. He had suffered two heart attacks and various other injuries that limited his physical capacity. But as Phil began to regain his strength and mobility, his aspirations grew. He realized he wanted to do more than just feel better; he wanted to create lasting memories with his grandsons after experiencing the loss of his wife. This led him to set his sights on a challenging goal: completing the Spartan Race Beast. And he did it! Phil conquered the Beast, proving to himself and others that age and past setbacks are not limitations. Now, he's set his sights even higher, aiming to complete the full Spartan Trifecta in 2025. Despite the obstacles and the emotional weight he carried, Phil embraced the process with unwavering dedication. Through personalized strength and conditioning and a focus on pain-free movement, he has made incredible progress and is a true inspiration. Phil's story is a testament to the power of resilience and the human capacity to overcome limitations and achieve the extraordinary, even in the face of adversity. It also beautifully illustrates how even small steps towards better movement can pave the way for bigger dreams and accomplishments. At Base Factory, we believe that limitations are not roadblocks, but rather opportunities for extraordinary growth.
